Renewed “Don” Rowing Canal Was Solemnly Opened After Reconstruction

On Saturday, April 28, there was a solemn opening ceremony of Rostov-on-Don sport facility “Don” Rowing Canal after reconstruction. The Head of Rostov-on-Don Administration Vitaliy Kushnarev and the minister of physical training and sport of Rostov region Samvel Arakelyan participated in the activity.

Rowing Canal is one of the largest sports facilities in the South of Russia. The reconstruction of Rowing Canal started in 2016 and lasted till December 2017. It consisted in the improvement of canal enclosure, modular building of rescue service, referees’ towers, above-water and underwater anchors, observation house and stands, installation of video surveillance system along the enclosure perimeter, territory improvement, fitting up of rollerdrome area. Moreover, the canal bottom deepening was done within the reconstruction.

The reconstructed canal will be worthily valued not only by the professional athletes, but also sports amateurs, because here there are all conditions for doing running and various games-based sports. Sport activities and training are regularly held at the territory of the canal. Except for the rowing distance, the rowing canal has such sport facilities, as sports grounds for mini-football, handball, streetball, beach volleyball, basketball, beach football and handball, big tennis.

“The renewed Rowing Canal, like other objects constructed and reconstructed for FIFA World Cup, it is first of all the heritage for many future generations of Rostov citizens. I am sure that our citizens will come to Rowing canal for many years to lead a healthy way of life and go in for sports, and physical culture school of Rowing Canal will train new Olympic champions”, the Head of Rostov-on-Don Administration Vitaliy Kushnarev stated.
